What is Boswellia?
Boswellia refers to the dried (gum) resin of the tropical frankincense tree Boswellia serrata. The resin (viscous liquid) is released from the tree trunk when the bark is naturally damaged or incised by humans. Boswellia is called a 'gum resin' because it contains both water-soluble (gum) and alcohol-soluble (resin) components. Boswellia has been traditionally used for thousands of years as a powerful, natural remedy for joints, airways, and the gastrointestinal tract. Boswellia (as an extract) has also been popular and promising as a dietary supplement for decades. It is the boswellic acids that are considered the most important active substances, with acetyl-11-keto-β-boswellic acid (AKBA) being the most effective according to research. Boswellia extracts are usually standardised to a high AKBA content (naturally, Boswellia contains only 2-3% AKBA). However, the effectiveness of a boswellia extract is not only determined by the content of active substances but also by the bioavailability of these substances after oral intake. AKBA is relatively poorly absorbed. Improving the bioavailability of AKBA ensures greater effectiveness.

Mechanism of Action
The main mechanism of action of boswellia is regulating the activity of the enzyme 5-lipoxygenase (5-LOX) and 5-lipoxygenase-activating protein (FLAP) by the active ingredient AKBA. 5-LOX is responsible for the synthesis of certain leukotrienes (locally acting tissue hormones) from arachidonic acid. By helping to maintain normal levels of 5-LOX and FLAP, boswellia contributes to healthy cartilage and supports the normal function of the joints.

Aprèsflex®
Boswellia-AF from Vitals contains AprèsFlex. This is the new name of a high-quality boswellia extract from producer Laila Nutra. Previously, this same extract was known under the name Aflapin®, as it is also found in various scientific publications that substantiate its effectiveness. Laila Nutra is an expert in developing well-absorbed and fast-acting boswellia extracts. They were already successful with the popular extract 5-Loxin®. However, the producer believed that there was still room for improvement in the absorption of the active substances in boswellia. By testing various compositions with an emphasis on even greater bioavailability, Laila Nutra developed the AprèsFlex extract, an improved version of their earlier extract 5-Loxin. This 'next-generation' product consists of a boswellia extract (standardised to 20% AKBA) supplemented with a portion of the non-volatile oils from the boswellia resin. Adding these naturally occurring oils proved to be the golden move in improving the absorption and bioavailability of AKBA. Despite the lower percentage of AKBA in AprèsFlex compared to 5-Loxin (20% and 30%, respectively), comparative research indicates that AprèsFlex is up to 50% better absorbed and even more effective.
