Lemon balm was known to various cultures 2000 years ago.
Charlemagne was so convinced of the special power of lemon balm (especially for feelings of nervousness) that he included it (along with several other plants) in the plant list of his Capitularis de Villis.
Lemon balm was one of the 16 magical herbs of Albertus Magnus (Albertus, Count of Bolstadt, 1193-1280).
The booklet "Liber aggregationis", with a Dutch translation "Dat Boeck der Secreten Alberti Magni", is believed by some to have been written by him, and it lists those 16 plants.
The Carmelite monks have been producing their 'Melissa spirit', an alcoholic drink based on Melissa, since the early 17th century.
