Momordica charantia, known as Karela (Indian), Sopropo (Surinamese), Bitter Melon (English), or Fu-Kwa (Chinese), is a member of the Cucurbitaceae or Cucumber family.
The plant is found throughout Southeast Asia and is cultivated in many countries worldwide as a vegetable.
In its raw form, this vegetable has an unpleasant smell and a moderately to very bitter taste.
The names "Bitter Melon" and "Fu-Kwa" (literally: bitter cucumber) already hint at this.
