Lactase (also known as ß-D-galactosidase), typically produced by the lining of the small intestine, hydrolyses (‘breaks down’) lactose into the corresponding monosaccharides, glucose and galactose. The body can then digest these two monosaccharides more easily. Thus, lactase enzyme aids in the digestion of lactose.

Lactose is a milk sugar found in all dairy products derived from milk. Some people digest lactose less efficiently.
