The flowers distilled for La Drôme's hydrolates are sourced from organic farming or wild harvesting in pristine natural areas. The floral waters or hydrolates of La Drôme are obtained through a slow, prolonged steam distillation using spring water from fresh, mostly organic, flowers and plants. The flowers or leaves are placed in a distillation flask for this purpose. The rising steam causes the cells, rich in plant extracts, to burst open. The steam, laden with essential oils, then condenses in a Florentine flask under cooling with cold running water. The water becomes floral water as it enriches with the water-soluble components of the essential oil and fragrant elements. In the separating vessel, the floral water and the essential oil separate due to a difference in density. The floral water produced in this artisanal manner is rich in aromatic components.
