The wild Ylang ylang is a tropical tree approximately 10 – 40 metres tall, originally from Indonesia and the Philippines. The cultivated trees are pruned to remain smaller, in shrub form, about 3-5 metres high. The flowers of this tree are white, soft purple, pink, or yellow. They are small and grow in clusters, half-hidden behind the large green leaves. The oil is extracted from the freshly picked flowers through steam distillation. This oil has a fruity, floral fragrance and is yellowish in colour.

Ylang ylang has a beneficial effect on blood pressure and heart rate. It balances hormones, is an excellent oil for the skin, and regulates sebum secretion. Ylang ylang is an aphrodisiac. It relaxes, calms, and dispels stubbornness. It is excellent for relieving depression, mood swings, and anger.
