The bitter orange tree originally hails from China. This tree, which can grow up to 10 metres tall and boasts dark green leaves and fragrant white flowers (Orange blossom), belongs to the Rutaceae family. Petitgrain is distilled from the young twigs with leaves and unripe fruits. The oil ranges from light yellow to pale green, with a fresh floral citrus scent.

Petitgrain has antispasmodic, aphrodisiac, cleansing, purifying, relaxing, calming, and refreshing properties. It acts as a deodorant against excessive perspiration. Petitgrain can prevent or alleviate depression. It is an ideal oil for melancholic individuals and a pick-me-up for sadness and disappointments.
