can you live with a deficiency of boron as the Dutch soil is so rich in boron
Boron (boron) is an essential trace element; this means that you need a very small amount of it daily, but it is indeed important for good health. If you do not consume boron daily, you can develop complaints. Over the past 10 years, a decrease of 10% has been measured in the Netherlands on light sandy soil, which means that, like many other trace elements and minerals, soil depletion is resulting in less being present in our food. Fortunately, it is added to most multivitamins, such as the Mega Multi:

I've been taking it for a while and it seems to help, albeit in combination with other supplements. Apparently, it can be dangerous and even fatal at high dosages, from 15-20 grams per day. Shouldn't that be listed under 'Warnings'? And why Solgar adds citric acid to supplements that have been fine for years is beyond me!
When taken orally and used correctly, Boron is safe in amounts not exceeding 20 mg per day. Solgar's advice is 1 capsule per day. The content of 1 capsule is 3 mg, so you would need to take 6 to 7 capsules a day to exceed 20 mg per day. If you take 20 mg or more of Boron per day and do so for an extended period (longer than 2 to 3 weeks), it can indeed be very harmful to your health. The same applies to other supplements; there is always advice on the number of capsules to take, and it is not intended to exceed that without the advice of a specialist or doctor.
Hello, why is citric acid included? I cannot tolerate lemon; should I opt for another brand instead? And what is the best form? Boron glycinate? Calcium Borogluconate? Vital Cell also contains boric acid but without citric acid; which one is best absorbed and safe? I would prefer to try Solgar/a capsule, but if I cannot tolerate it due to the citric acid, can I return it? Thank you.
Citric acid is included here as a preservative and acidity regulator. This citric acid is not derived from lemons but is produced through fermentation. This is actually the case for nearly all citric acid found in food products and dietary supplements. Although lemons do contain citric acid, it is rarely sourced from lemons.
However, if you have difficulty tolerating lemons, it could indeed be due to the high levels of citric acid naturally present in that fruit. If that is a possibility, it might be wise not to order this product. We cannot refund opened packages.
Citric acid is also found in oranges, tangerines, and grapefruits (in quantities that are significantly higher than in these capsules). Are you sensitive to those as well? Citric acid is actually present in nearly all types of fruit, including grapes, apples, plums, mangoes, and even olives, but in lower amounts than in citrus fruits.
In the meantime, the display of the ingredients has become clearer. Solgar’s Boron 3 mg contains boric acid, which is indeed not a compound with citric acid but with oxygen and hydrogen.
Boric acid is listed in Annex 2 of the EU. It, along with sodium borate, is the only permitted source of boron. Any other form of boron is prohibited.
The older response from 2016 will be updated. Apologies for the confusion.
The product you linked to contains boron bound to the amino acid glycine. So it is a slightly different compound, in a slightly lower dosage (2 instead of 3 mg) but can be used for the same purposes.
