Get a Grip on Your Immunity This Autumn

19 september 2022

Fewer than 10% of Dutch people eat according to the 'Wheel of Five', a guideline for healthy eating established by the Nutrition Centre. Our plates are filled with too many animal products and not enough vegetables, resulting in a significant portion of the population not receiving sufficient nutrients. Yet, obtaining adequate nutrients is crucial for our immune system. Orthomolecular science recommends supplementing our diet with additional vitamins and minerals, especially as the weather turns colder. Preferably tailored to individual needs; a barrier that Vitaminstore – with free, personal advice – aims to lower this autumn.

We consume too few vegetables. Orthomolecular science advises a minimum of 500 grams per day. The 'Wheel of Five' suggests a daily portion of 250 grams, but the harsh truth is that the average Dutch person doesn't even achieve this. Studies also show that the levels of vitamins and minerals in our foods have drastically declined over the years, partly due to soil depletion from intensive farming. Additionally, imported fruit is often picked prematurely to ensure it remains fresh upon arrival in the Netherlands. Adequate nutrient intake is fundamental to a well-functioning immune system. Your immune system derives direct energy from these nutrients, and a wide range of nutrients also contributes to indirect factors supporting the immune system. Consider good sleep, reducing physical stress, or having enough energy to exercise.

Health Means Something Different to Everyone

Everyone's lifestyle is different, and thus we don't all have the same formula to support our immune system. Orthomolecular specialists at Vitaminstore are ready this autumn to help people with personal advice. Noor de Bruijn, CEO of Vitaminstore, says: ‘We want to provide people with reliable solutions to fully enjoy life. That's why we truly look at individual needs and health goals. We believe everyone is capable of working on their health and thus experiencing more control over it, regardless of their starting point or current lifestyle.’

What Determines How Strong Your Immune System Is?

All processes in our body are interconnected in a complex interplay. This is also true for our immune system. Some factors in this interplay are fixed, such as genetic material or age. Other factors can be positively influenced: such as sleep, exercise, and obtaining sufficient nutrients. Quality vitamins provide nutrients to energise the immune system – but also contribute indirectly. For instance, there are supplements that help with relaxation, support sleep, or assist with fatigue. Orthomolecular specialists at Vitaminstore map out these individual needs, discomforts, or health goals to provide personal advice.

Enjoying Life Now, Soon, and Later

Our immune system is a significant energy consumer: in action, it demands a great deal from our bodies. We don't always have that energy, especially when lacking sleep, exercise, and nutrients. The body will then put other non-essential functions into a conservation mode. This is not beneficial for our health, both now and in the future. Adopting a healthy lifestyle as a habit will reduce the chances of potential discomforts in the future.
