The test requires 500 to 600 (ml?) of blood to flow into the enclosed tube, but after pricking, I barely manage 100. So, off to the GP for a blood test.

When is a vitamin D blood test recommended?
Vitamin D deficiency is common. In the Netherlands, about one in three people experience this. People are especially at risk at the end of winter. From May to October, the sun is strong enough for the skin to produce sufficient vitamin D. In winter, sunlight is too weak, and since it's not possible to obtain the daily recommended amount of vitamin D from food, everyone has a higher risk of deficiency during winter. The daily recommended amount for an adult is 100 micrograms.
Babies, young children, pregnant women, the elderly, and people with darker skin have an even greater risk of low vitamin D levels. For instance, the skin of older people is less effective at producing vitamin D from sunlight compared to younger skin. Additionally, you have an increased risk of low vitamin D levels if you spend little time outdoors each day.

This blood test is a self-test that you can easily perform at home with a finger prick. The sample is then analysed in an ISO 15189 certified medical laboratory. This way, the convenience of a self-test is combined with the accuracy of laboratory research. After six working days, you will receive the results with all the information you need about vitamin D and some specific recommendations to improve or maintain your vitamin D level.

On 17 december 2024 by Customer serviceThe colour indicates whether your vitamin D level is good or not. So you already have an indication yourself. If you send the test off, the lab will provide the final result. That will be a value.
