Why cortisol is measured
High cortisol levels can, over time, make it difficult for the body to relax. You may become easily irritated, struggle to fall asleep at night, or feel overtired. These are symptoms associated with high cortisol levels.
Cortisol is a hormone produced in our adrenal cortex and released in response to stress and anxiety stimuli. This hormone is necessary to manage stressful situations. However, experiencing prolonged stress or anxiety can have negative consequences for our body. You may sleep poorly, become overtired, and it can even lead to high blood pressure.
Measuring your cortisol can be easily done with the cortisol test
You can measure your cortisol with a saliva self-test, which is easy to perform at home. You receive 2 tests to map out how your cortisol level is throughout the day. After sending back your sample, you will receive a report with the results and personal recommendations to maintain or achieve the correct cortisol level within 14 days.
What can you do with the results of the cortisol test?
You will receive a complete report with the results within 14 working days after taking the saliva sample. This report includes additional information about cortisol, your results, and personal recommendations to optimise your cortisol level.
The results show whether your cortisol level at two measurement points meets the reference. The report also discusses the progression of your cortisol level throughout the day. Symptoms possibly related to cortisol are quickly brought to light this way. A morning measurement can indicate whether the release of cortisol in the morning is initiated. If this is not or only partially the case, it could point to chronic fatigue. An afternoon measurement provides insight into chronic stress. If the release of cortisol does not decrease or decreases only slightly as the day progresses, it indicates excessive stress.
The report also contains several lifestyle recommendations based on the cortisol measurement. This allows you to start optimising your cortisol level immediately. Adequate relaxation, a good night's sleep, healthy nutrition, and the right amount of physical activity are examples of this.

The laboratory only receives anonymous data (no name or email address) necessary to analyse and validate the sample. Name and address are stored in the Netherlands to send the results. Data are not automatically deleted, allowing you to request your results again, say a year later. However, upon your request, the data can be removed.
