What is Nannochloropsis?
Nannochloropsis, or Marine Phytoplankton, is a microscopic plant that sits right at the bottom of the food chain. For a billion years, all living creatures, both in the ocean and on land, have been directly dependent on phytoplankton. This oceanic plant provides about 70% of all the oxygen on Earth. Like land plants, phytoplankton perform photosynthesis, using sunlight to absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and release oxygen. This oxygen production is vital for maintaining the respiration of many marine organisms and contributes to the oxygen level in the atmosphere.

Marine Phytoplankton is also the food from which fish derive their high omega 3 content. Small herbivorous organisms, such as zooplankton, feed on phytoplankton. In turn, these herbivores are eaten by small fish, which pushes the food chain further up. Thus, phytoplankton indirectly provides food for many sea creatures.
