Swedish Bitters (Swedish Herbal Bitter)Maria Treben
Composed of 11 types of herbs according to the old family recipe.
In her book "Health from God's Pharmacy", Maria Treben writes that the Swedish physician Dr. Samst described and applied the Swedish Herbal Elixir in its current form. The old recipe was found among his notes after his death, as he used it daily. Dr. Samst died in a tragic horse-riding accident.
He was 104 years old at the time. Although it initially seems like an old Swedish herbal recipe, research indicates that the origin of this remedy should be sought in the regions around the Mediterranean from a time long before our era.
More about this product
During the time of the Roman emperors, a similar drink called "Theriak" was widely used as a detoxifying agent (detoxicum) and it was well known that a spoonful of this remedy could quickly bring relief after a lavish meal. It can be assumed that both Greek and Roman scholars must have drawn from the experiences of their Egyptian predecessors since such a detoxifying agent had long been used in Egypt.
The recipe for the Swedish herbal bitter appears in some form in the history of medicine every century, from the Ptolemaic period in Egypt (323-30 BC) to the 20th century.
The current recipe, and subsequently the names Swedish herbs or Swedish bitter, are thanks to the physician Kristian Hendrik Hjärne from Stockholm (Sweden).
