Scutellaria is the Latin name for Skullcap. The name Scutellaria refers to the cup-shaped flowers of the plant, as 'scutella' means little dish or small shield. Scutellaria lateriflora originates from North America, specifically in the east.

Some flavonoids that Scutellaria is rich in include baicalin, wogonin, and apigenin.
